Greece – Cyprus: A New Chapter of Cooperation for Sports Integrity

05-May-2026 With continuity, consistency, and a shared vision, Greece and Cyprus proceeded with the second joint meeting of CESS (Committee on Ethics and Sports Safeguarding) and National Platform for Sports Integrity, which was held for the first time on Cypriot soil, marking yet another meaningful step in the ongoing fight against the manipulation of sports competitions.
This meeting is a natural continuation of the first historic gathering that took place in March 2025 in Ancient Olympia, a place of great symbolism where the values of “fair play” were born. One year later, the cooperation not only maintains its momentum but is further strengthened through more targeted actions and joint initiatives.
Holding the meeting in Cyprus highlights the shared determination of both countries to safeguard sport against corruption, reinforcing transparency, accountability, and the credibility of competitions.
The Committee on Ethics and Sports Safeguarding and National Platform for Sports Integrity cooperation, formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation in June 2024, is now entering a more mature phase, with a focus on the exchange of expertise, the harmonization of practices, and the development of joint mechanisms for the prevention and tackling of match manipulation.
During the meeting, the strong political and institutional will to further deepen cooperation was reaffirmed, with the aim of creating a robust framework for the protection of sports integrity in Greece and Cyprus, as well as more broadly across the region.
At the second joint meeting, National Platform for Sports Integrity was represented by the Secretary General of Sports and President of National Platform for Sports Integrity, Giorgos Mavrotas, as well as Antonios Vourakis, Maria Dimopoulou, Vasileios Keramaris, Vasileios Plexidas, Giannoula Konstantinidou, and Ioannis Iakovidis. From CESS, all members of the Committee participated, including President Stefanos Skordis, Vice President Efthymios Efthymiou, and members Christina Ioannou, Nikola Koursaris, and Nikola Konstantinou.

The second joint meeting confirms that the cooperation between Greece and Cyprus is not merely institutional, but substantive and strategic, with the shared goal of promoting clean, fair, and credible sport.
This momentum takes on even greater significance at the international level, as on Tuesday, May 5 (09:30–10:30), the opening ceremony of the 10th conference of the Group of Copenhagen will take place in our country on May 5–6, with participants from all over the world, strengthening international dialogue and collective actions for the protection of sports integrity.
